Who asked you?
he rulebook talks about the plate umpire making all the decisions on the batter. When I began umpiring (Eisenhower was president), amateur umpires were eager to help out each other. Then, the world changed, and it was every man for himself. Surely we can find middle ground. You and your partner should find it before the game. Will it be Adam Smith or Karl Marx? Laissez faire, or all for one and one for all?
Decide whether the field umpire will help before he's asked when:
- the batter is hit by a pitch;
- the batter's batted ball hits his bat twice;
- the batter's batted ball hits him in the vicinity of the plate;
