Play 1 – The Check Swing

Introduction

he check swing appeal is the most popular form of the “ask for help” play. The plate umpire, while tracking the ball to the plate, is either blocked or distracted from seeing whether or not the batter offered at the pitch.

Some basics on the check swing appeal: In games played under the OBR, the plate umpire MUST ask for help on an appeal from the defense. The plate umpire, in a two-umpire system, MUST ask his sole partner regardless of the partner’s position on the field. If you are working a game solo, you MUST ask the appropriate base coach for help (just kidding!).
