OK, I need good equipment – what’s good?
ssuming the new umpire has enough money for uniforms and equipment, he still faces the challenge of finding the equipment that’s right for him. To be honest, most equipment choices in an umpire’s career are made through personal preferences (how many of us have owned more than one mask or chest protector simply because we really didn’t “like” the old one?) and umpire referrals. Inappropriate and varied umpire referrals can lead to confusion and frustration on the part of the new umpire.
The two schools of thought I’ve heard regarding “rookie equipment” are: (1) buy top-notch right away; and (2) buy less expensive now and upgrade later. Considering how much money can be quickly earned by a prep official, it is surprising that money is an issue when it comes to equipment, but it is. Sometimes the money issue is out of the new umpire’s control.
