efore this series degenerates into horror stories about transfer officials and the problems they face, I would like to take some time to talk about the positives of moving into a new association. Such positives are out there, but to be honest, the migrant official will have to look very closely to find them.
When I moved from Pennsylvania to Knoxville, Tennessee, I figured I would immediately jump into a position as a regular varsity official. I had worked basketball for six years prior to my move, and I thought I had done a good job on the floor in Pennsylvania.
I was put into place rather quickly. I was placed – deservedly so – into the ranks of the JV officials. Looking back, it was the best thing that ever happened to me. My mechanics were terrible as was my floor coverage and judgment. The association supervisor, a former NCAA Final Four official, told me I had the ability to be a good Varsity official; I needed more experience.
