o, the men who teach truly quality umpire clinics are not motivated by the money they earn. Even the most generous clinic organizers are unlikely to offer a great instructor more than about $1,000 for a weekend (expenses paid). That’s for the guy with a big league name who the organizer believes will really add to the registrations. That great instructor’s annual salary includes as many digits to the left of the comma as to the right. He’s away from home seven months a year and very jealous of his off season time. The $1,000 (or less) is about like someone buying dinner for you or me.
Next consider minor league umps or amateurs with a real flair for teaching. Well, let’s just say there is no comma on their checks.
Why is he teaching?
After scheduling and executing about 30 clinics for Gerry Davis Sports in the past four years, I’ve learned something about motivating the instructors. The money has to be worthwhile, but the complete experience has to be fun. So, what are the real motivators?
Well organized clinic with clear teaching assignments
Good meals
Camaraderie among the instructor group
