The timing of my injury proved significant. Several aspects of my life had coincided, or perhaps collided, at this same time; and it seemed to me that it would be wise to take a moment and learn what I could about what was happening to me.

I was in the middle of my second career transition. I began my adult life as a teacher but had drifted into business about twenty years ago. I had recently decided to get back to teaching and had quit my job.

Over the past couple of years, I had cut back on my bicycling and other physical activities. Unfortunately, my appetite and eating habits did not experience a similar decline, and I had gained some weight.
