lthough I addressed Parts I through III to coaches, I hoped that umpires would recognize themselves in the escapades that I described in which coaches took umpires for fools. As such, it was an instructional piece for umpires, this being an officials’ site and all.
In recounting their exploits on a baseball field, umpires set up the coach as the fool. I pointed out that it is the official who is often the fool. Most officials are too arrogant to recognize that the coaches play them like fiddles. But if you saw yourself in any of the scenarios I presented, then you are on your way to becoming a better official.
