Why study the rules?

I have recently been asked that question, at least rhetorically, by each of two contemporaries whom I have chosen to dub Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee. You do remember Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, don't you? They were the portly apparent twins in Alice in Wonderland. If you studied them closely, though, you quickly came to realise that rather than being identical twins, they were instead the mirror reverse of each another: ironic, given that they both only gained life in the mirror-reversed world of Alice’s Wonderland.
