n the final part of this series, we’ll examine the odds and ends that make umpires go. Your plate gear is meant to save your butt, and your uniform is meant to make you look the part. But having the small items can make games smoother for you and in many cases make you comfortable. I can’t wrap this series up without telling you about two umpires named Dave and Norm.

Undergarments

I know you are wondering why we are still on uniforms? Undergarments have long been recommended but like a lot of other things, some umpires never bother. I am here to tell you that the new undergarments aren’t anything like the past. These new fabrics are moisture wicking and they actually allow sweat to evaporate instead of being trapped against your skin. Yes, they are a little expensive, but they’ll pay off on that doubleheader in the middle of July. Just make sure your t-shirt is an approved color for your association!

Editor-in-Chief: Here in South Texas we use Underarmour — two kinds: one for hot weather; one, for cold. I wouldn't walk onto the field without them.
