y first season umpiring high school baseball was back in the eighties. My first partner wore a balloon protector, we all wore the button-up Elbeco shirts, and I was told, under no uncertain terms, that I should never overrule my partner on a checked swing.
The good ol' days
In other words, compared to today, I started in the dark ages of umpiring. Of course, one could argue that then my editor-in-chief started in the stone ages.
Today things are different. We’re enlightened now. Heck, my editor-in-chief wrote four articles filled with radical mechanics changes and has even been seen on the baseball diamond wearing a red umpire shirt. Red!
I’m not mocking the evolution of mechanics or my editor-in-chief.
Heck, there are some mechanics we used to do that I can’t believe we did myself.
Remember in basketball when we had to cross over the court on a live ball to get in the "Cadillac" position? Oh, wait, wrong sport.
