A Change of Seasons — Part I
You mean the rules are different ?

t’s that time of year again for those of us who work high school (FED) baseball to begin to think about summer baseball. For some of us, those are happy thoughts. But for others, the thought of the change in seasons yields negative vibes. In this two-part series, I’ll try to cover many of the differences between FED and summer baseball. For now, let’s start out with the major rules differences. High school baseball is almost always played under National Federation of High Schools rules while summer baseball is generally played under the Official Baseball Rules (OBR). I won’t cover all of the differences between OBR and FED. If you’re looking for those, then buy Papa C’s book. (I was hoping a plug would get me a free copy.)

Batting

In FED baseball, the designated hitter is part of the game. The rules governing the DH in FED are fairly straightforward. Summer baseball can be a different animal all together. Here are few of the batting order rules I’ve seen while working summer baseball:
