Mechanics
When Papa C asked me to cover differences in mechanics for this series, I scratched my head a little bit, trying to figure out if there were any differences. I did come up with a couple that might be of interest. If you remember in Part I we talked about the Force Play Slide Rule (FPSR). On that play, contact after the ball has left second on its way to first can come into consideration.
A runner cannot slide past the bag and make contact with the fielder. As a base umpire in proper position, you’ll be moving towards first for the whacker there. You won’t — and shouldn’t — be able to see if that contact occurs. Some associations advocate the following mechanic: The plate umpire must develop a position to see that contact. (It mandated by NCAA and American Legion [OBR primarily} rule.) I have heard some "lively" discussion as to the validity or necessity of that mechanic.
