The Virginia High School League (VHSL) has policies in place to severely discipline coaches who are ejected from high school baseball games. Since the VHSL lacks the staff to enforce their directives, they count on umpire assignors and athletic directors to act as their enforcers. As we know from Part I, ADs and assignors have an agenda different from the VHSL. Everyone wants a high level of sportsmanship at prep school athletic contests. But not everyone wants sportsmanship to trump all other aspects of the contest. It's just one of many competing interests.

A five-step process to ejection

When a coach gets ejected, there is potentially a high cost to pay. With so much on the line, due process must be followed. As a precursor to that due process, the umpires in my organization have been directed to adhere to the following five steps when ejecting a coach. These steps were outlined in a Power Point presentation during a recent umpire meeting.
