To eject a high school coach in Virginia, the umpire must follow the five-step process mandated by the Virginia High School League (VHSL). That process can be likened to a cop reading a suspect his Miranda rights. Failure to read a suspect his rights may jeopardize the prosecution's case. Failure on the part of the umpire to follow the five-step process may negate the sanctions (fine and suspension) that a coach must serve following his ejection.

Peter ejects a coach

Recently I ejected a coach and failed to follow the process. I will walk the reader through the ejection and point out where I failed. Here is a recap of the five-step process I outlined in Part II.

  1. Tell the coach that what he is doing violates the rules. Tell him what rule or protocol that he is violating. 
  2. Warn the coach that if he continues in his behavior, you will restrict him to the bench.
