In Part III, I outlined a situation that resulted in a coach ejection from a high school game. High school coach ejections in the Virginia High School League (VHSL) must follow a strict protocol. Just like cops and Miranda rights, coaches have rights in baseball games. Failure to read them their rights will negate the sanctions they must pay (fines and suspensions) for each ejection.
Did you spot the errors I made? Let's take a look at them, one at a time.
First, buy the BRD
(How's that for a shameless plug for the editor?) Step One of the policy is as follows:
Tell the coach that what he is doing violates the rules. Tell him what rule or protocol he is violating.
It is a fundamental tenet of umpiring that you do not allow the coach to come out and argue about balls and strikes. In my ejection report I wrote:
Coach, it is a violation of the rules for you to be out here arguing about balls and strikes. For violating the rules, I am restricting you to the dugout for the rest of the game.
