As a male, Billy’s brain had evolved over the millennia to allow him to focus all his senses on only one key objective at any one time. That is called concentration, and in humans it is a legacy of the male’s pre-historical social role as the hunter. If a hunter couldn’t focus on the kill, his family probably wouldn’t eat. It was a matter of survival, a simple evolutionary imperative.
