ast week: foul balls. Today, balks. During my career as a trainer, balks have always been the most requested subject in my clinics. If you’ve read even a few of my baseball articles, you’ve also learned my belief that calling some technical balks (non-deceptive penal or mechanical infractions) is the surest way to make trouble for yourself. But what balks not to call isn’t the subject today. It’s how not to call the "real," deceptive balks.

The year is 1954, and I’m in my first season and my first game where runners could lead off bases. "Be alert for balks, son," my partner reminded me before the game. "This ain’t Little League. We’ve got to watch out for pitchers who deceive the runners."
