mpires take up the profession for a variety of reasons. High on the list, according to knowledgeable people, is the desire for power. I agree with those authorities, but I feel compelled to add that the thirst for power may be all-encompassing in some umpires but just a small part of the equation in others. If a thirst for power is all the umpire is after, then we not only have a bad umpire but one who can also be easily manipulated.
