he internet has really taken much of the mystery out of working games away from home. Tournament directors and game assignors can be located and corresponded with easily. You don't need me to help you find a tournament worth working. Take a cruise on Google's Search. Once you've located and sent your inquisitive e-mail, you will be asked one question: What's your experience? Document your game schedule. Not only do they have to think you are up to the games, you must prove that you have already handled such situations successfully back home.
One other important consideration. You'd better be in great shape and able to handle standing out in the sun all day. Let me be clear. That would be in full gear. Over 100-degree heat. For 10 hours straight.
Maybe the first year the assignor could cut you some slack and only give you two games a day. That won't last long. It didn't with me. I had to pay my own way, fuel, motel, food, daily laundry; and you will face the same challenges. To make ends meet, more than two a day are required.
Fortunately I've been retired for several years and have no job schedule to slow me down. Using your entire vacation week for physical torture may not be your cup of tea. No slackers needed at national tournaments.
