ou remember Mikey, don't you? He is the local whiner I talked about in "Loathe them now, love them later." I said then that he didn't get it. I was obviously right.

Whaaaaaa.....

After two hours of boredom, booted balls, and overall uninspired play, Mikey, a RH batter, has come up to bat in the bottom of the eighth with his team up 9 to 1. There is one out and a runner on second. I am U3 in a three-man system, so I am on the third baseline. The second pitch is close to the inside corner and is called a strike.

Editor's note: This is the mechanic I also favor. But there is that group, growing yearly, who believes the first-base umpire should NEVER go into the infield. In such a crew, Blaine would have been in C —  and this article would never have been written.
