A Place in Life

Nobody went

I was coming home from a baseball game that no one in my family had attended. That was a common occurrence in the 1960s, or at least it was in my neighborhood. Parents seemed to have their own lives, and the stands were usually half empty. I was feeling a little bit melancholy.

"Nobody ever watches me play. Nobody shows up to my games. I know I'm just a bench warmer, but come on. Where's the love, man?" Those thoughts were ravaging my mind, and I couldn't stand it anymore. I was going to take action. As I opened the door to my house, I made the announcement. "Hey everybody, I hit a home run."

The entire family went nuts congratulating me, John Neeley, home run hitter and no steroids. Of course, no one knew anything about steroids in those days, but it makes the story sound better, don't you think?
