The three-base overthrow
As we all know — or should know — every overthrow is a two-base award. That's the rule even in Canada. But here's a play where I wound up giving three. I'm not kidding: Read on.
One out. R2 is running at the crack of the bat. The batter hits a deep grounder to the shortstop. R2 freezes about two-third's of the way to third, and the shortstop is looking right at him. F6 takes one step toward him, and R2 is off again. The shortstop’s throw to third hits the runner and bounds out of play. By the time the shortstop releases the ball, the batter has reached first.
So, you have read the play, right? Read it again. There is more going on — as I found out.
