Remember the situation
e had one out in the fourth, with Tim on second. Base hit. Tim heads for home. No slide (it’s not required), and he runs through and over the catcher. The catcher is not pleased. Remarkably, Tim comes to bat again in that same inning. I move around to clean the plate, warning the catcher not to do anything stupid. Too late.
He didn't give Tim a chance to get hit by a pitch. He had already dropped his glove and mask and was throwing punches!
We broke up the fight, handed out warnings, and picked up the game. I figured the worst was over. Wrong again.
Editor's note: Blaine's article created some chatter in The Forum. DG wondered why an umpire would have "handed out warnings" for fighting. Blaine was quick to reply:
