It happened in Game 3 of a best-of-seven finals. In the fourth, Dartmouth was threatening with the bases loaded and one out. As the pitcher started to wind up, the runner on third broke for home. But after a few steps, he stopped.
Seeing the runner break, the catcher jumped in front of the plate and caught the ball.
As this happened, I first thought, "Why me?" Then my instincts took over. "TIME!" I bellowed. It looked a little hinkey. Here is the problem, though.
The runner started running from third — but stopped. So this wasn’t a legitimate steal or squeeze play.
I just froze. I couldn’t figure out what the ruling really should be. So, I improvised.
"BALK!" I called — and advanced all three runners.
