Once upon a time
hen you began your umpiring career, more than likely your rules knowledge depended upon your playing experiences. Then, to become a credible umpire, you had to learn how to read — the rules. Next step was understanding them and their intent. Finally, you learned that different umpires have differing ways of stating their understanding of the rules, some more correctly than others. Hence, some become pompous, over-bearing Charley's and others turn into common- sensical teachers.
It's the time of the year when all our Hot Stove Umpires Associations [a generic name meant to make you think of your own local association] have their educational meetings. Attendance is required. Eligibility, supposedly, for working the all-important, final championship games of the season depends on attending the required meetings. Been there, done that!
