NCAA 8-5k

udd, the best working partner, one whom I respect beyond any question or doubt, went to the NCAA meeting in DFW while I attended the TASO meeting in Beaumont, Texas. Our logic? When you both can't go to both, send one to each.

When Budd phoned me during one of the meeting breaks, I detected a high level of surprise along with a good bit of chagrin: "You won't believe this one. Brace yourself. Go look at 8-5k. It's one of this year's rules to remember."

I looked in the 2006 Rulebook I carry with me at all times and found the quote:

The runner is out, including a runner in contact with a base, when he is hit while in fair territory by a batted ball before it has touched or passed all infielders that have a reasonable chance to make a play, other than the pitcher.

Another quick glance at the 2006 BRD revealed the NCAA caveat and added a play example:
