A night to remember
t was the longest night, up to that point, in my short life. My parents had been traveling all day long in a 1964 Ford Falcon van with eight little Neeleys in the back. Sounds like trouble already. We were all tired and vociferously whining about our condition, but my mom just looked at us and said,: "We are not going to abandon our friends." It was the summer of 1965, and we were in Georgia with my dad's best friend, Colonel Fountain. Colonel Fountain was one of the coolest guys I ever met.
A toilet can be a dangerous place
My dad and the colonel did everything together: worked, played, barbequed, gambled. Although Colonel Fountain was a legendary sports junky, I believe my dad took a double sawbuck off him when Ali beat Liston. Or was it when Clay beat Liston? When my dad decided to go to Mexico City for a long summer vacation, Colonel Fountain decided to bring his clan, too.
