Idle
ype A personalities always have something to do. They always seem to have a project either in the planning stage or on the workbench. They do not believe in idle time, idle hands, idle minds. They do sometimes look nervous, but they never look as if they spend their waking hours at rest. When they are at rest, they are dreaming about doing something.
Umpires can learn from that attitude. The lesson to be learned from the plays I recently experienced and described is simple: Whenever runners are on base, anticipate the possibilities of what might happen. The time that umpires have between pitches is a luxury that can be put to good use. Why not employ those golden moments to prepare for the next play. One play might run into the next. What might the sequence look like? What would be the call?
