Why do umpires umpire?
think my story is typical. The way my umpiring career began is the same as many other umpires. I started working games because the Little League Officials of North Austin Lions said they needed help. My son was playing Minor B ball, so I was offered Major (the 11- and 12-year-old) league games. It was fun. It was voluntary. There was no pay. It was for motherhood, apple pie, a Dr Pepper, and love of Texas.
After a couple of seasons, the Little League district officials, including Kirk Lawrence, offered playoff games. That was fun, too. I can't say that my talent was being rewarded, but surely my faithful attendance was reaping rewards. The games were more challenging. Fun!
