Learning by asking questions

hen I ask questions, one thing I've learned is that I could have asked somebody else. When an umpire watches a batter/runner beat the throw to first but miss touching the bag, that umpire is looking for a proper appeal of the missed base. When an umpire watches a runner from third slide past home plate without touching it, he's not looking for an appeal, he's looking for a completed play. Neither play has anything to do with the other.

Most every time I used to wonder why it was that a batter/runner missing first base was different from a runner failing to touch home plate. For I knew that both situations mandated I'd have to hurry up and wait.

Umpires ask questions

It was a no-brainer for major league umpire Tim McClelland. All he had to do was hurry up and wait. And ask questions:
