ecently, I lurked for a day or so in The Forum. I used to post, but I grew tired of arguing with the likes of ..... Rather than start another flame war, I’ll let you fill in the names. A thread about a batter hit by his own batted ball struck (no pun intended) me as interesting.
We know the rule: If the batted ball hits the batter in the box, we call "Foul ball." If he’s not in the box, we call "Dead ball" and signal he’s out. Part of fair territory, we also know, is in fair territory. So....
This past weekend in the top of the third, first game of a double-header, the left-handed (important) batter swung mightily and topped the ball right to the ground. He started for first, and the ball bounced up and hit him. My partner screamed: "Dead ball!" But he didn’t signal that Rodrigo was out.
