enerally, baseball games rock along smoothly: Batters get hits and make outs, runners score runs and make outs, pitchers throw strikes and balls. On an unlucky day, you might have to make an award for an overthrow. It’s possible a batter-runner might interfere with a throw to first. Rarely, you might have batter interference with the catcher’s throw to prevent a stolen base. All routine, all easy.
But my GHC [game of the half century] was anything but routine. In the articles to come, I’ll discuss, as they say on Dancing with the Stars, "in no particular order":
- fair/foul;
- hit batter;
- obstruction;
- simulate a pitch;
- a different kind of hit batter;
- batting out of order;
- live ball/dead ball;
- ejections;
- batter’s box;
- on-deck circle;
- carelessly thrown bat; and
- courtesy runners.
