If, like me, you’re impatient and don’t want to re-read those pieces, have no fear: Here is a synopsis of the major points.
A. There are only two positions from which to view a pitch: (1) over the catcher’s head and (2) in the slot. The GD is a slot position.
B. There are four stances: kneeling, balanced, heel-toe, scissors.
- Kneeling is bad in a two-man crew. It's difficult to clear the catcher to follow the batter-runner down the line on ground balls hit to the infield. It's equally difficult — and awkward looking — to cover third when R1 and the ball both go there following a single.
