The play

avi, the professional, could stay for only two innings (he had his own third-place game in his division), but he was on my field when "The Play" happened.

R1 only, with the score Valley team 10, out-of-town Warriors 2: F1 came to the stop, wheeled, and fired to first. Pause, pregnant pause. After what seemed an hour, the first baseman raised his glove on high.

"He’s out!" I screamed. I'm sure I was the most surprised person within earshot.

The reaction

Coach Jeff Williams didn’t exactly charge from his third-base box, but he arrived in the middle of my face with "dispatch," as the Army would phrase it.
