couple of weeks ago, I received an email in response to an article I had written earlier this year. Tongue in cheek, I wrote about umpires from hell and directed it to coaches. I was hoping that umpires would see themselves in the article and take corrective measures. The coach wrote to say that a power-hungry umpire had hosed him. His edited email, minus his name, follows: [I placed one comment of my own in brackets.]

The letter

Dear Mr. Osborne,

I am coaching my son's 13-14 year-old baseball team. As I write this email, I have a sick feeling that my lack of understanding of what makes an umpire tick and how to stay on the good side of the ump cost the boys an important game.
